Cut Stool

A sitting project with a size restriction of 12" * 12" * 12"

Process

  • Ideation

This stool is inspired by the motion of cutting, specifically cutting apples or fruit with peal. The cuttings have different texture compared to the surface. It is designed to be a multifunctional two part stool, offering different sitting poses and functioning as small side table.

  • Prototyping

The forms went through a series of prototyping with clay in a smaller scale. The stool is designed to be in an approximate spherical form . To incorporate the concept of cut and fit perfectly in the prompt of 12*12*12 grid, the middle is oval. It gradates to circles on the two ends.

  • User-Testing

The life-size model is tested with different users of various body-shape. They explored and tried the different sitting position the stool offered and found it comfortable. With the two parts being in different heights, the poses include squat, leg lifted sitting, and normal sitting position. The groove at the oval side cut ensures the user to pull and pop the stool open.
